Eight Year Pacific Island Stop-over
When I met Lane 8 years ago, he told me NZ was just another wee Pacific Island that happened to be a good place to shelter during the tropical cyclone season. It had already taken him 8 years to get this far from Seattle, Washington, so he was obviously in no hurry. He was living on Mai Tai then, getting a few jobs done on the boat ready for the next leg of his voyage around the world.
Why New Zealand?
Many NZ boats, products and the sailors themselves are well known around the world. New Zealanders (or Kiwis) are "boaties" and a strong boating industry has grown because of it, and this is why cruisers come here to get work done.
It had now been 15 years since Mai Tai was last stripped and fitted out ready for the start of this voyage, so we thought it would be wise to give it a thorough refit here where we had got to know the industry and its people so well.
