Ready to head south.Dated: 07/01/08
January 2008. We are ready to go south.
With all our business taken care of we took some time out to enjoy some summer sailing with friends before heading off on our Southern Ocean adventure.
We had our Christmas dinner at a delightful anchorage on Waiheke Island. Mai Tai had the biggest oven and the biggest dining table so we got to do the turkey and host the dinner. Everyone contributed to the meal which turned out very festive and fun.
On to the Mercury Islands, where we swam with dolphins who were playing around our anchor chains, then following a successful scallop dive, we headed to Great Barrier Island for a New Year party.
New Year's day we set sail as the winds were perfect for us to begin making our way north again. This time we will be heading up over the top and down the west coast as far as Nelson at the top of the South Island.
We have done our last shopping and now we are going through our "passage check list": liferaft, epirb, grab bag, jack lines and safety harnesses. Lee cloths in place and all lockers securely closed.
We are watching the weather closely and in a couple of days the large high that is approaching NZ will hopefully provide us with favourable winds for our 500 mile voyage south.
Northland offers sunshine and some beautiful sheltered bays to wait in.
